GOLD COAST STROKE SUPPORT GROUP
CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON 2011

The Gold Coast Stroke Support Group held its annual Christmas Luncheon at the Southport Tiger’s Rugby League Club on Wednesday, 8 December 2011. The number attending on the day was well down on previous years’ attendances. Forty-nine people attended on the day to partake in a very enjoyable two course Christmas Luncheon which was enjoyed by all those present. The main course was cooked by the Southport Tiger’s chef, Wayne Shepherd and his son Jason. A feature of the Christmas Luncheon was the delightful home-made Christmas puddings made by the chef’s mother-in-law, Annette Canning.

There were ten prizes in the raffle held on the day. Prizes consisted of a bottle of wine donated by Peta-Kaye Croft MP the State Member for Broadwater and dairy products (milk, cream, coffee chill and Ski D’Lite yoghurt) kindly donated by Norco Milk our Local Milk Manufacturer and ten small mystery prizes donated by GCSSG member Joan Walker whose husband Bruce had a Stroke in March this year and is now a resident in the Cyprus Gardens Retirement Village in Clear Island Waters. There was an additional raffle at which there were six prizes donated by Jenny Crewes, Location Manager, Somerville Funerals which company sponsors a bi-monthly Finger Food Luncheon for the group’s monthly meetings.

Local elected representatives Dr Alex Douglas, MP, the State Member for Nerang; Councillor Grant Pforr, Division 3 councillor of the Gold Coast City Council accompanied by his wife Liz; and Dawn Crichlow, OAM, Division 6 councillor of the Gold Coast City Council were in attendance at the Christmas Luncheon.

Colin Oxenford, the chairman of the Gold Coast Stroke Support Group said that according to information released by the National Stroke Foundation over 60,000 people has a Stroke each year. Of these 60,000 people one third will die and Stroke is the second highest killer after Heart disease in Australia.

The Gold Coast Stroke Support Group is a forum for many specialists (both medical & therapeutic) in the area of STROKE (or BRAIN ATTACK). Thus it offers attendees to meetings up-to-date information & education in the area of Stroke prevention, treatment, rehabilitation & support. Not only will Stroke Survivors benefit by attending meetings but members of their family and/or carer/s may also benefit. These benefits may flow to not only the Stroke Survivor but also to members of their family &/or carer/s.

Talking with others about your experiences, both before and after meetings, can often bring surprising results. A chance word may result in your learning how someone else overcame a problem you have, or the other person discovering how you mastered a problem they have. Come along to this meeting of the Gold Coast Stroke Support Group for you will almost certainly find someone there who has had a similar experience to your own. Cost per meeting:
There is no specific cost to attend the GCSSG monthly meetings. However, the following options are available: -
1. There is a Donation Bucket at the Entry Door;
2. Morning Tea is served from 10:30 am for a Gold Coin donation;
3. A Raffle is held at each meeting. Tickets cost $1.00 each, three for $2.00 or eight for $5.00.
